“We care green” starts at home: since January 2026, the BMA head office in Braunschweig has been supplied exclusively by locally generated green electricity, reducing CO₂ emissions by more than 1,000 t annually – and requiring no technical changes at all.
A major step towards decarbonisation: BMA switches to green electricity
Strengthening sustainability and energy efficiency in the sugar industry
Decarbonisation starts at home
In line with our guiding principle “We care green”, BMA develops technologies that support decarbonisation and greater energy efficiency in the sugar sector. But for us, sustainability does not stop with our customers: we also implement measures in our own company, such as using clean energy at our Braunschweig site.
More energy management, fewer CO₂ emissions
This step was made possible with our ISO 50001-certified energy management system. By providing the required transparency, it clearly showed that power consumption is one of the main drivers of CO₂ emissions at BMA. So we made that our priority.
Energy efficiency thanks to better data
We did not need to change our machinery or the technical systems of our buildings. “Most of the work was not actually the switch itself, but preparing for it”, says Emilia Waldow, Senior Manager Integrated Management System & Sustainability, “which we could not have done without reliable data.”
Green electricity for greater sustainability
The energy supplied to our site comes from the Braunschweig generation company BS Energy and is produced in a biomass co-generation plant. It lets us reduce our Scope 2 emissions by 1,054.16 t CO₂ equivalents annually.
Teamwork for lower CO₂ emissions
Many BMA teams made crucial contributions to this development – from Energy Management to the company management. And BMA’s Head of Purchasing Tobias Wiesner played a major role. He led talks with BS Energy and ensured successful conclusion of the contract. “There’s no special Sustainability team – we all have to work together to make it a success”, explains Emilia Waldow.
Decarbonisation as a guiding principle for the sugar industry
This switch to green energy marks an important milestone on the path to decarbonisation. And BMA is already planning more initiatives – for sustainable development in all areas of the sugar sector.
